Facts about Caldwell, Idaho
As the seat of Canyon County, Caldwell is home to more than 46,000 people. Considered to be part of the Boise Metropolitan area, the city is also the setting for the College of Idaho and the College of Western Idaho.
Established in 1883, Caldwell’s history begins decades earlier. Found along a natural trail that eventually became known as the Oregon Trail, the area attracted settlers in the years prior to the Civil War. Some who had come west after hearing of gold in the mountains surrounding Boise ended up staking claims and establishing homes in the area. The decision to establish a line of the Oregon Short Line Railroad in the area led to the development of the city itself. Even the name is owed to the presence of the railroad, as one of the business partners funding the project was named Alexander Caldwell.
The new settlement grew rapidly and continued to experience consistent growth throughout the 20th century. With an economy based in agriculture, commercial retail, and education, Caldwell remains poised to continue enjoying that growth. Celebrations of local history, including the annual Indian Creek Festival, occur throughout the year.
