Paint Technology: The History of Our Industry

Over the years, paint technology has come a long way. While old, lead-based paints disappeared and new techniques emerged, those in the industry modified their businesses to meet new federal regulations.

In the beginning, there were only a few brands. The competition most commonly came down to a company’s ability to color-match. Due to the lack of technology, achieving the right color was much harder than it is today and since recycling was not yet a thing, so much paint was wasted in the process.

Mixing shades was sometimes left to the contractors who would do custom tinting at job sites before painting. The contractors had to do this by using tubes of toxic chemicals that remained in paints for years after the new laws were passed. This method was ineffective, dangerous and expensive.

The application process also began to change when experts in the field started noticing jobs couldn’t stand the test of time. Thirty years ago, people in the industry began noticing paint jobs that went through an extensive preparation process lasted much longer. Today it is common-knowledge; scraping, sanding, planning and priming are key to guaranteeing a durable paint job.

Today there are several regulations intended to ensure each job is environmentally safe and cost-efficient. With new methods, paint shops are capable of assisting companies like Lime Painting much more. Advancements in paint technology and chemical engineering have transformed the home improvement industry.

Lime Painting has been on the cusp of innovation with new models for training and perfecting a way to meet clients with a full-service experience. We take the paint pretty serious too. In a sector that is rapidly improving, Lime Painting stays ahead of the paint technology game.
